St Andrew’s Knot

One of our favorite tie knots is the relatively unknown St Andrew’s Knot. We made an effort to give it some of its more deserved recognition, because it is the perfect choice if you cannot pick between the volume of the Half Windsor and the Double Windsor. It is exactly in between! In addition, it gives a great depth to the knot, so you can also make a nice dimple under it with your finger.

St Andrew’s Knot

1. Hang the tie around the collar with the back facing forward, the wide part on the right and the narrow part slightly above navel height. The exact height depends on the stature and thickness of the tie. Only the wide part is used when tying the tie.
   
2. Cross the wide part horizontally behind the narrow part of the tie.
   
3. Cross the wide section in front over the narrow section.
   
4. Pass the tie behind the knot.
   
5. Pull the wide part up along the neck.
   
6. Let the wide part come out on the right side.
   
7. Skip forward over the knot to the left side.
   
8. Pull the wide part up along the neckline.
   
9. Center the tie in front of the loop.
   
10. Insert through the loop at the front of the tie.
    
11. Tighten the knot by pulling the wide part down and place the knot as desired.

• Result: It is a bit narrower in shape than the Windsor Knots and a little less asymmetrical than the Four in Hand.
• When to wear? It is a fairly formal knot, for a night out with friends you might prefer a casual Four in Hand, but in the workplace and ceremonies St Andrew’s Knot is the way to go. It is suitable for all ties with a normal thickness and width.
